Introduction

This article explains how to perform a file upload in Logikcull. A file upload is used when you have native data files that you want to upload into the Logikcull eDiscovery platform, such as .PST files from Outlook, MBOX files from Google Workspace, folders of PDFs, or zip files containing JSON files from Slack, among others.

To start your file upload:

  1. Drag and Drop or select Browse to locate the individual files, folder, ZIP, or PST you're uploading.

  2. Assign a custodian (required) by choosing an existing custodian or adding a new one.

  3. Add a note about the upload (optional).

  4. Click "Start Upload" to begin the upload process.

⚠️ Please note: the assigned custodian cannot be changed or modified after the upload, so take care when assigning a custodian at this stage. Read more about custodian assignment here.

Common File Upload Questions

What happens after I start my upload?

Your upload of native electronic documents will now be transferred, processed, and prepared for your team's review. A progress bar will appear to show you what stage your upload is currently in, and we'll notify you when the process is completed:

  1. Transferring: The data is being transported from your local machine to Logikcull’s secure cloud environment. It is important during this stage to keep the browser window active. The upload cannot begin processing until the entire data set is completely transferred.

  2. Scheduled: Your upload has been received and may now be queued in line behind one or more other uploads within this project. At this point, you can safely navigate away from the Uploads page at any time knowing that we've received your data and will process it in the order in which it was received.

  3. Analyzing Data: Your uploaded data is now being scanned and shuttled through the heart of Logikcull, where documents are virus-scanned, applying OCR or text extraction, searching for DTR, passing through language detection, rendering to PDF and web-viewable formats, and much more, before moving on to Post-Processing.

  4. Post-Processing: Logikcull is now wrapping up its work on your uploaded data by applying applicable Auto Tags (QC Tags), analyzing duplicates, indexing all text into our search engine, and syncing up with previous uploads. Once Post-Processing is complete, your upload will be ready and you'll receive a highly detailed notification via email.

What file types does Logikcull support?

Will I need to ZIP my files prior to uploading into Logikcull?

For most file uploads, nope! Logikcull will collect and zip up your files automatically. However, depending on file size limitations for your device or browser, you may be prompted to zip your files first. We recommend using Keka for Mac, or 7-Zip for Windows/Linux. See here for additional guidance on recommended ZIP software.

Why is my Project's storage size larger than what was uploaded?

Data expands as part of Logikcull’s comprehensive processing workflow, an automated process that is essential to maintaining the integrity of your information. When you upload documents, Logikcull preserves, organizes and enhances them to:

  1. Ensure files are secure: this entails scanning for hard-to-detect viruses, preserving metadata to protect against spoliation, and encrypting files at rest.

  2. Speed up the search and review process: this includes:

    1. Deduplication πŸ”—

    2. Running Deep Text Recognition and Optical Character Recognition πŸ”— on document images

    3. Indexing metadata πŸ”— so you can find documents easily

    4. Flagging potentially privileged documents (see Auto Tags below)

    5. Rendering PDF image snapshots πŸ”— of native documents for easy review

    6. Applying Auto Tags πŸ”— to provide insights into document metadata and processing

These processes occur automatically, so no need to worry whether key data is being missed or processes are being skipped. This automation allows Logikcull to repeat the same processes consistently and reliably across all data sets.

Why doesn't my upload appear to be processing?

Once an upload has completed transfer and processing has begun, the automated work of extracting, imaging, and analyzing data will take place. Depending on multiple factors, including the contents of your data, your upload may appear to be slow or even stalled. Logikcull's support engineers are automatically alerted to any issues related to uploads, and in most cases the support team will reach out directly to the uploader to assist with remediation. Troubleshooting Failed Uploads

A failed upload can be caused by one or a variety of different factors. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can investigate:

Optimize for data transfer.

For file uploads, the first phase - Transferring (i.e., yellow progress bar) - relies on your Internet connection to get documents over to Logikcull for processing. We recommend the following to help move your upload through the transfer stage and into processing:

  • Upload from a local drive (i.e., desktop files) as opposed to a shared drive or a thumb drive.

  • Plug into a high-speed DSL line (as opposed to WiFi). You can check Internet speed here: https://www.speedtest.net/
    ​

  • Stay logged into Logikcull while the item is transferring. You can adjust computer sleep settings to ensure the system does not go to sleep during the transfer process.

  • If you're trying to upload a spanned zip (e.g. items ending in .zip.001 or .z001) please first extract all parts of the spanned zip, starting with the first section, and re-combine the entire volume in a non-spanned format to upload to Logikcull.

Check for password protection on the file.

If your file is password-protected, Logikcull will load it as a 0 byte file. We recommend decrypting the password protection prior to uploading into Logikcull.

PST still connected to Outlook.

We typically see best results when uploading PSTs if the item is uploaded from a local drive such as a desktop (vs. a shared drive), and also if the PST is disconnected from Outlook.

To disconnect the PST, Open Outlook > Right-click the Personal Folders file (i.e., the PST) that you want to remove from the Navigation Pane > Click Close Personal Folders.


​Corrupt PST

Fortunately, this can be easily remedied using ScanPST, a program that is meant to specifically address corrupt PST files.
