In this article, we will pull back the curtain on how, when, and where to apply search operators and use Logikcull's Advanced Search builder.

The Advanced Search Builder

Logikcull’s Advanced Search Builder allows you to craft Boolean searches using natural language. Here is a quick overview:

Let’s dive in:

Here are the steps explained in the video above:

Example: We are looking for all emails tagged as “Confidential” but we do not want to see any emails tagged as “Hot”.

To open the search builder, click the gear icon in the search bar:

Begin to build your search by adding your first search criteria. In this example, we start by selecting our document type - Email:

Then we add our second condition:

This time we select “AND” to include emails tagged as “Confidential”:

Then we add our third condition:

Let’s make sure to choose “AND NOT” to exclude emails tagged as “HOT”:

Then Click Search and your Search Syntax will automatically appear in the search bar:

Search Builder Best Practices

DO use the advanced search builder form to Test your results. This will show you how many hits are found within your data.

DO use the advanced search builder form to edit your queries. When you click Search, Logikcull will build the search syntax and insert it fully formatted into the main search bar.

Once the search syntax has been formatted into the main search bar, you may need to add parenthesis to the syntax to achieve the best results. It is best to group same parameters together using parenthesis. Other than adding parenthesis to the search syntax formatted, DO NOT edit the text in the search bar after you run an advanced search. The text you change in the search bar IS NOT reflected in the advanced search form. So, if you need to edit the text, open the advanced search form and edit the text there, not in the search bar.

Best of all, you can save your work and re-run the advanced search at any time over new or existing data - just save the search!

Bulk Keyword Search

Bulk Keyword Search allows you to test and search for a list of keywords or search syntax.

This feature can be found in the same section as the Search Builder:

With Bulk Keyword Search in Logikcull, all you need to do is add your keywords or the Search Syntax in the list. Yep! You can definitely add any search syntax in the Bulk Keyword Search (keywords, tags, proximity searches):

Use the "Test Searches" button to see the doc hits/page count/file size per keyword or search syntax entered:

"Search all" allows you to see the resulting documents across your full list.

You can even click "search" for a specific line to see the specific hits from it in the results.

⚠️ The search is always run within your current set of active filters. For instance, if you’re filtering on Tag = Responsive, and Custodian = Jane Doe, your keyword searches will run within this already filtered set.

Entering searches in the bulk keyword search defaults to searching the body text. However, you can specify your search with the syntax that refers to a specific metadata field. You may want to pull the appropriate syntax from the advanced search builder, as needed.

For example, if you want to use the bulk keyword search to find multiple documents by unique id, add the following syntax in front of the id string:
file_id:(fileID1 fileID2 fileID3)

ℹ️ Pro tip: We recommend a maximum of ~500 lines.
